Bible Verse For Today Thursday 22 May 2025 Morning Reading
Matthew 5:48 (KJV) “Be ye therefore perfect, even as your Father which is in heaven is perfect.”
Message: “The Call to Christlike Perfection”
Jesus ends this portion of the Sermon on the Mount with a striking command: “Be ye therefore perfect.” At first glance, this may seem impossible—how can anyone be as perfect as God?
The Greek word translated “perfect” (teleios) means complete, mature, or fully developed in character and purpose. Jesus isn’t calling us to flawlessness, but to spiritual maturity, moral integrity, and consistent love, especially toward others—including our enemies (as seen in the verses just before this one).
God’s perfection is most clearly revealed in His love, mercy, and holiness. Jesus is inviting us to reflect that same character in our lives. It’s a call to live above cultural standards, rise above retaliation, and embody the kingdom lifestyle.
This verse challenges believers not to settle for spiritual mediocrity, but to continually grow in the likeness of Christ, depending on His grace and the power of the Holy Spirit to mature us into God’s image.
Other Bible References:
Leviticus 19:2 (KJV) “Ye shall be holy: for I the Lord your God am holy.”
Ephesians 4:13 (KJV) “…till we all come… unto a perfect man, unto the measure of the stature of the fulness of Christ.”
James 1:4 (KJV) “But let patience have her perfect work, that ye may be perfect and entire, wanting nothing.”
1 Peter 1:15-16 (KJV) “…be ye holy in all manner of conversation; Because it is written, Be ye holy; for I am holy.”
Prayer:
Heavenly Father, I thank You for the high calling to be perfect as You are perfect. I know I cannot attain this in my own strength, but I trust in Your Spirit to grow me into the likeness of Christ. Mature my heart in love, holiness, and mercy. Teach me to walk with integrity, to love even my enemies, and to live as a true reflection of Your character. Let every area of my life come into alignment with Your Word. May my desire be to please You above all. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
